Contemporary art is defined as art that is current, offering a new perspective and point of view and often employing new techniques and new media. The currency of contemporary art challenges what was before and hints that there is more to come. It should confront prevailing notions. It might also be seen as interesting, exciting, significant and fresh.
Quoted from a piece that the late Robert Hughes, the highly respected Australian art critic, wrote for Time Magazine
Somerset Contemporary Artists’ Network was formed in 2009 with the aim of supporting emerging artists,
particularly after graduation. SCAN provided an artist-led support and networking group and has been influential in helping to establish a number of successful Somerset based artists.
Since then SCAN has evolved into a more general support group, as many of the original members have become established. In 2016 the group moved with the times and went totally ‘on-line’; members are encouraged to have their own Social Media presence, such as Facebook and Twitter to help engage with SCAN's growing on-line community. Here members still benefit from group knowledge and support by sharing information and ideas on line or asking for advice on a particular problem, that others may have already have met and solved.
Throughout the year small groups of members may get together to put on shared exhibitions, at a variety of venues throughout the county and there will be an annual Open Exhibition.
New members are welcomed but must apply on line, to go through a simple selection process.
